The Police Chief Would Like to Have Tea With You Original Fine Art Print
THE STORY BEHIND THE ART: "The Police Chief Would Like to Have Tea With You" is an original work of art from Tim McIlveene, the founder of British Malaya Shop. This print is taken from a common experience he had when he lived in China during his 20's. He would backpack through rural areas where few - if any - tourists went. After he checked into a guesthouse an inevitable knock at the door would happen and a uniformed police officer would be standing there. Upon opening the door and greeting the officer, he would tell Tim in very serious tones, "the police chief would like to have tea with you." Which in reality was not an invitation but a command given so the chief could understand what Tim was doing in such a remote area and to encourage him to leave the next morning!
THE IMAGES: The image of the man in the print is taken from a vintage postcard from China. It featured a group of three gentlemen with the caption "Chinese Actors". We thought it looked cool so we named our shop after it.
The image is overlaid with a lovely sepia toned color with hints of golds and browns. Yellow was the traditional color of old China and this gentleman looks very regal and royal in his costume. Over the man's face is a red bar that covers his eyes. It's meant to represent the feeling of not knowing what's going on and a slight menace of the phrase. All in all this is a very original piece.
