The Man With the Key is in Beijing - Original Fine Art Print
THE STORY BEHIND THE ART: "The Man With the Key is in Beijing" is an original work of art from Tim McIlveene, the founder of British Malaya Shop. When Tim lived and worked in China and Southeast Asia for several years he heard this line from many, many shopkeepers. He would ask for a certain product at the store. If the clerk didn't feel like going to get it he would say, in Mandarin Chinese, "sorry we have it but it's locked up in a cabinet and the man with the key is in Beijing." Essentially it was a brush off, but an amusing one. Tim has tried to use it himself in the US but to no avail.
THE IMAGES: The man featured in "The Man With the Key is in Beijing" is taken from a vintage postcard from China. They featured the three gentlemen with the caption "Chinese Actors". We thought that looked cool so we used it for the name of our shop!
The piece is overlaid with a Chinese red color to symbolize China and Chinese culture. The man has highlights of yellow and purple which symbolized royalty in old China.
